We routinely KC intubated babies skin to skin as soon as it is felt they
will tolerate it, but always as early as humanly possible. It's definately a
case by case thing - I have seen (the occasional) intubated 26 weeker KC'd
who does fine and some intubated 34 weekers who do not. It's never just a
matter of whether or not they are intubated. We use two staff members to
move the baby to mom or dads bare chest while they lay back in a recliner
and place the baby prone on them. One staff member handles the baby and all
the associated wires and lines, while the other staff member (nurse or RT)
disconnects the vent from the ett for just a few seconds and then reattaches
it once baby is on parent. Baby and parent are covered with blankets - from
the warmer if needed at first, but usually just receiving blankets. No
special shirts or covers needed really, but we do pull a privacy screen
around during the move. The vent tubing can be taped or clipped to mom or
dads sholder to keep it stable if need be.
