Patricia,
I have worked OB for over 25 years, and no one ever told a mom to stop
breastfeeding because of a transfusion. There is no problem unless the blood
is contaminated, and no one would willingly give contaminated blood. This
sounds like the usual knee jerk reaction of the medical guy who doesn't even
have common sense. My experience with moms who hemorrhage, is the some have
a day or two of delayed response to their full milk supply emerging, and
having the transfusion, would only help this be less of a problem. I hope
this mom is back to nursing. Good luck! Shirley Morris, RN, IBCLC, LMT
