I have been hearing more references to the left and right brain activities
in conferences lately and applying it in practice.
The right brain is what we use to teach and set guidelines but it is the
left brain that is our "instincts" and how to parent. So I tell parents to take
in the information but then to use their left brain or their instincts to
determine their baby's needs.
I am talking in general terms and with healthy full term babies. I
emphasize the parents watch their babies to recognize what they are trying to
communicate to them. What we as health care providers try to tell them are
guidelines such as babies need to feed 8-12/day or not to go greater than 4 hours
between feeds in the early weeks.
I am becoming a real believer that parents who do use their left brains are
enjoying their babies more.
