I've found all this discussion of saline quite fascinating!  I've been
encouraging mothers to use a similar solution (1 cup water + 1 tsp. salt
+ 1 Tbsp. vinegar) to relieve the discomfort of thrush.  This came via a
LLL colleague who attended a workshop on thrush.  I found it to be a
godsend when I had thrush and many mothers report finding it soothing.
I had never thought to suggest it for cracked nipples, but will in the
future.
