I think we have to balance what we say to sound positive but not be
deceptive. Sam, with cleft palate babies -- how many can really breastfeed??
If there is no palate then they might not make enough suction. Moms need the
information about active sucking, milk transfer, and proper weight gain so
that baby doesn't become FTT.

I never say that things like nursing a cleft palate baby or relactating are
not possible, but I also don't tell moms they definitely will be able to do
either one.

Karleen, I do think mothering and breastfeeding takes self discipline. What
I meant by that comment is that many moms think bottle feeding is easier
than breastfeeding here in the USA. It doesn't matter that one infant food
is better than the other -- what matters is what is "easier" for mom.

In the long run, breastfeeding is much easier than bottle feeding but
mothers have to get past the newborn period to see this.

Relactation takes commitment and self discipline in my opinion. One has to
keep working at it for several weeks before one sees the beginning of
success. I work with a lot of moms who want to relactate but almost no one
is successful -- most give up quickly or can't get baby to latch on. Not
allowing baby to cry is a big cultural thing here and mothers feel their
baby chooses to bottle feed! This is a low income population who get most of
their formula for free, and who get the IBCLC help free, and the loan of an
Elite pump free, SNS, etc.
