On 5/8/06 I was interviewed by Medstar TV about being a lactation
consultant in a pediatricians office. (one of the doctors I work for is Ari
Brown, the author of Baby 411, and she does a lot of public speaking
regarding pediatric care, and is on the AAP board. I mention that as that
is how they found out about her pediatric office having a lactation
consultant in it) Anyway. I don't know how it is going to turn out, but
they were very pro breastfeeding (the news team), and it should put a
positive light on the importance of breastfeeding and the difference a
lactation consultant can make. We had one of my patients interviewed as she
was breastfeeding her newborn. This was her second baby and since she had
successfully breastfed her first child, she did not think she would need a
lactation consultant. When she came to our office on the babies first check
up on day 4, her nipples were sore. She, of course, had her baby in the
cradle position, as most experienced breastfeeders do, and listened to my
reasoning of why that can cause sore nipples with the newborn. We changed
the position to CCH and she reported a much more comfortable latch. We
discuss all this on the interview.

Medstar TV is a production company that tapes stories for other news
stations to purchase and run. It will be a few weeks before it is edited
and ready for release, but you can call your local station and request they
run that story.

Of course, I run the risk of being embarrassed nationally.but I am
excited to at least help get the message out about the important role that
lactation consultants have!
