We have speculated, and it sounded logical, that mom's IVs could
contribute to baby having an artificially high birth weight and
subsequent loss.  However, there was a study at the poster session in
Acopulco refuting this.  I think it was Jan Riordan who did the study.
Now the study needs to be replicated, but in the meantime I have backed
off on declaring this as a likely cause of initial weight loss.  I still
think the meconium is one factor artificially adding to baby's birth
weight.  On the other hand, I have seen some babies with such "fluidy"
fat that they almost flows over your hands when you pick them up.
Interestingly enough, these are usually artificially fed babies.  Aside
from feeding issues, we just don't know for sure what accounts for the
initial loss.  I agree that we need to assess each case individually.  I
have seen some with less than 10% that worry me and I've seen some at
12% that are doing fine and just late to "catch up".
