Hello All,
I have had a question from an expectant mother that has me puzzled. I
reviewed the previous postings on this subject, and I am still not sure of
the answer (if there is a definite one). She has given me permission to post.
This woman is a healthcare worker. She was nursing her 12 month old when
she developed mastitis which did not respond to traditional treatments.
Her breastmilk was cultured, and came back positive for MRSA. She was
instructed to wean. Did so reluctantly, and given IV vancomiacin. She was
told she then tested negative. She never had sores or boils the MRSA was
related to the Mastitis. Unofficially picked up at the hospital from an
infected, chronically ill patient. Her immune system is good to my
knowledge. This all occured one year ago. She is now 6mos. pregnant and
has many (good)questions. 1. does she still have MRSA? 2. Can she be
cultured at this time perhaps with a swab of expressed colostrum? 3. If
it is positive, or she is presumed to "have MRSA" can, should she
breastfeed her infant? At the breast? With pasturized milk? Avoiding
mixed feedings?
I thought this was one that the lactnetters would like to sink their teeth
into. If this has already been answered I apoligize. Any references for
the ped or OB would be great!
All you ladies out there studying for the exam I'm with you! Good Luck!
