In my postpartum doula trainings I tell students that babies who are left to
cry learn that the world is not going to be there for them and that they
can't trust their parents. If they are responded to immediately &
compassionately they not only cry less but will become independent sooner
and less clingy because they will have self esteem and confidence in their
right to be loved.

Gail,
Great way to explain it. Thanks for sharing it.

This is the correct reference from Lawrence it goes on to say to bring the
milk to scald then rapidly cool-freeze. This is the point just before
boiling and where cows milk forms a skin. I don't know if human milk also
forms a skin. This process deactivates the enzyme that breaks down the fat
in the milk to give the soapy smell.

Subject: soapy smell to milk

>From LLLI's Breastfeeding Answer Book (1997), p. 191--

"Some mothers have reported a slightly soapy smell to their frozen milk
after it was thawed. This change in smell has been attributed to changes in
the milk fats related to storage in self-defrosting refrigerator-freezers;
it has not been found to be harmful to the baby (Lawrence, p. 619)."

I've had mothers say the baby will not accept milk that has this strong odor
and others who say the baby couldn't care less.

Subject: Telling parents about letting babies cry

Wow, Gail Hertz, what a wonderful analogy to use with parents about letting
their babies cry instead of attending to their needs. I can't wait to get
the chance to try that out on someone!
I always say "It is easier to hold a happy baby than to listen to a
miserable one cry" So many parents here seem to think baby needs to learn
independence immediately. I have heard new dads and grandparents already in
the birthing suite telling new moms who are happily getting acquainted with
their new little ones "Oh, you're going to have that baby so spoiled."

Subject: Re: funny milk taste

This soapy taste is often the result of shaking the milk vigorously
to "encorporate" the risen fat back in. I have seen mothers try
to "homogenize" their own milk (I did it with my own first baby, 17 years
ago) and then have this soapy taste occur.

There are some theories that the fat may be changed into a soaplike
substance. Lawrence reports that this is most likely not harmful to the
baby. I have smelled and even tasted my own milk in this state (again 17
years ago, I knew better with subsequent children,) and it is not pleasant.
I have also seen babies drink it with no complaint. When this happened to
my milk, many years ago, I threw it away. I didn't pump much, or feed EBM
often, but I wish I had known NOT to shake the daylights out of my milk.

I instruct my clients to give the milk ONLY a gentle rocking motion and not
to worry if all the fat (cream) doesn't encorporate back in. The baby will
get enough! I also explain the cow's milk would do the same thing, if it
wasn't so processed.
