One of our nurses came to me this morning concerned about a new warning from the FDA concerning mothers breastfeeding after being given methergine. I called the Infant Risk hotline and they told me that Dr. Hale is very concerned about this and is in total disagreement.

He suggests that LC's get together and write to the FDA about this. Do you know if anything is being done?

I am very worried about this. TOOOOO many mothers get a methergine shot after delivery...it is VERY commonly used. Over-used to be sure and that is another issue also! But the ramifications are HUGE.

My nurses tell me the info about the FDA Statement concerning Methergine and BRF came from AWHONN and they will not go agaisnt their guideleines, as we follow AWHONN for our procedures.

There must be some reason why the FDA is not listening. Does anyone have any information?

Donna
