"Sniffing position" might be a good descriptive image to use when you are
teaching a mom how to position baby's head for a good latch.
When you enter a bakery or a good restaurant and catch the fragrances of
good food, what do you do? You lift up your nose and sniff, sniff, sniff,
ahhhhh.
I appropriated this description from the firefighter who taught my CPR
update class. He used it to describe how to position a baby's head for CPR.
The position was exactly what we try to teach for easy latch-on. I think
it's easier than telling mom to elevate baby's chin off his chest so he has
adequate space for suckling, comfortable swallowing, and easy breathing
because his nose isn't schmushed into the breast.
