Like Jan Barger, I also have much personal experience with lo-carb eating.
One of the selling features of the diet is that the initial weight loss can
be amazingly dramatic. That is because "a low-carbohydrate diet acts as a
natural diuretic" (Dr. Atkin's words.) Losing the fluid she needs to make
milk could possibly be a factor in a mother's decrease in supply. As she
continues on the diet, that will change. And certainly a breastfeeding woman
needs to eat more carbohydrate on this diet than the average person. I have
worked with women who have used this diet while breastfeeding without seeing
a decrease in their supply. I would be inclined to suggest that the
"Carbohydrate Addict" diet be used instead, since it downplays the fats and
includes one hour a day of eating whatever one want (fruits, whole grains,
and healthy foods suggested of course.)
