Do we want concrete, well researched advice here? Or can I reiterate
what we all know is true. Emergency weaning in this situation sounds not
only difficult and unlikely to help, but downright dangerous to this
mom. Any surgeon ought to reasearch any special circumstances in a case
before making reccomendations about what s/he knows not.

I would highly reccomend she talk again to this MD and perhaps seek
another before going along with this. Even if a hospital stay is
required (and I would be looking into home IV therapy  and nursing care)
the baby could still nurse. Many moms have gotten through a variety of
surgeries with modifications to "normal" policies and a little
creativity. Dads (and grandparents) are great for transporting babies
back and forth, they can help with positoning , or pumping at first and
protecting the surgical site later.

I really think people should be required to understand all the functions
of a body part before they are allowed to operate on it!

I am going to go calm down with my knitting now!
