"Who funded it? Who published it? What was the researchers' agenda?"

It seems the agenda, as stated in the article, was to make it easier for
hospitals to become Baby Friendly without having to adhere to steps 6 and 9

Step 6: GIve newborn infants no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless
medically indicated
Step 9: Give no artificial teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infants.
As stated in the study:
"In countries with low hygenic standards, the risk of infection by
contaminated bottles, pacifiers and supplemental liquids justifies theses
two steps. The purpose of the study was to examine the need for strict
adherence to steps 6 and 9 in industrialized countries."

One of the nurse managers had told the staff not to show up and complain
about not allowing bottles without documentation. So, they did just that,
they managed to find this study. I am keeping an open mind, and realize
that every study does not support the negative impact of bottles and
pacifiers on breastfeeding.
The fact that they at least showed up with a study, (good or bad) rather
than just complaints, is a step in the right direction. Debating things
from a scholarly perspective as opposed to "that's the way we have always
done it" is much more constructive. I am reading the study and trying to
decide how to handle my response. Any suggestions for brilliant, succinct,
or clever responses are welcomed!! :)
Thanks for the input I have received thus far. Lactnet is such a great
tool, when you are feeling like you are all alone---all the friendly words
of encouragemnet, suggestions and challenges to pursue excellence in our
care and practices are what keeps us all going!
Thanks again,
Beth
