The news over how this is being handled by the authorities just gets
worse. At the risk of simplifying everything too much, wouldn't it
have been more effective in stopping so-called abuse, as well as more
humane, to just remove all males over - say - 16, than to separate
mothers and their children - at least until the authorities have had
time to sort out what was really happening? According to Bowlby the
effects of maternal deprivation are extremely serious until at least
8 years of age. And I well remember how distressed I was at age 13
being separated from my mother when I had to go to boarding
school. Breastfed or not, weaning from the mother should ideally be
child-led, no?

And yes, Karleen, you're quite right. It seems that Morgan's
strategy has been confined to an uncompromising advocacy about the
effects of maternal-infant separation on _the child_ . By insisting
that, first and foremost and no matter what the circumstances, the
well-being of small children should be foremost in everyone's minds,
regardless of what the parents have been accused of. Yes, as far as
I'm aware, she has sent documentation, and rounded up expert opinion
testifying to the likely damage to the child of being separated from
his/her mother. With amazing success. As a bystander, it seems to
me that officials will treat mothers with impunity, but will pause to
reconsider when confronted by the strong possibility that they are
likely to actually harm the child they're trying to help.

Hi Liz,
I was thinking of the kind of thing that Morgan has achieved in the UK with
her organisation for refugee mothers babies and mothers and children in the
child protection system. Her work has been much in the way of providing
resources and information to the people who make the decisions.
