Dear Friends,
I have been thinking about this a lot. Although the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol #3 (find this under recommendation
number 3) says a healthy, term newborn will be fine if they don't eat
for 48 hours, I feel like, why not put some money in the bank?
Teaching mothers hand expression in those first days is invaluable. So,
if you have a baby who is not feeding well in that first day or two, why
not have her hand express into a teaspoon and give spoon feed that to
the baby? During this process, the mother is becoming comfortable and
trusting of her breasts, the baby is getting the perfect food, and the
mother is kick starting her milk supply.
Our charge is to first do no harm. This doesn't hurt anyone.
So, why not?

Thank you!
