Hi Jake,
I just spoke t the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and I was told that they do not have a blanket exception from antidiscrimination legislation. They can apply for an exemption for particular purposes however, they have not done so in anything related to pregnancy or breastfeeding. A brief doc here http://www.defence.gov.au/fr/policy/di(g)35_2.PDF indicates that when the sex discrimination act was brought in that the ADF was bound to apply it. So it is different here than in the US. I wonder if someone who is in the UK can find out the situation there? This is an interesting discussion.
