I'm forwarding this from the parent-l list, does anyone have any
practical or medical suggestions for this mom (including appropriate
drugs?) Thanks, Cathy

Subject: Arthritis Flare Up

Hello all, I'm back on line again. Can I consult this group about my

arthritis problem as it is starting to interfer with breastfeeding.

I have rheumatoid arthritis, and am experiencing a post natal flare
up.
Most of the pain is in my hands but recently also in shoulders and
lower
back. I am getting painful nipples from not sitting or lying
correctly
while Tegen nurses as my back hurts. Last night was the worst, I
literally cried as I tried to nurse Tegen in the middle of the night.
 I
just couldn't lie on my side, the pain in my back was _so_ bad. I
begged
my husband to give Tegen a bottle, but she fell back asleep while he
was
preparing it. I have seen a doctor and have contacted the local
Arthritis
Society, apparently this flare up can be expected to last 6-12 months,
 and
it started about 2 months ago. I am trying to control the pain by
taking
tylenol three times a day as I am told my only other optionis to
wean
Tegen and go back onto medication (can't nurse her while taking my
usual
medication of Voltarol or diclofenac sodium).

Some might remember I use an SNS, so Tegen gets suppliment already.

However, nighttime feeding has always been without the SNS and I am
_very_ reluctant to give this up.

Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.
