Pediatrics, 92 (1), 151-153, July 1993 reports on 2 cases of infant
botulism at 1 week of age. Case 1 was very sad, baby VERY sick.
Eventually recovered, but at 2 getting PT weekly. Exclusively breastfed,
no traces of C.botulinum pores found in home environment. Case 2 breastfed
baby, prolonged hospital course, but at 19 mo growth and dev are normal.
Both babies were positive stool culture for C botulinum. The article also
refers to Pediatrics 87, 159-165, 1991 article about 57 cases occurring in
Philadelphia over a period of 12 years. In case 1 & 2 mode of infection
was unknown. Treatment is symptomatic with support of respiration and
nutrition. I believe the article was written to show that there is no
lower age limit (babies sick on days 6 & 8) for onset of disease, there may
be no obvivous reason why, child looks very septic. Article outlines index
of suspicion for botulism
vs sepsis. Early identifification and support so necessary. Sincerely, Pat
in SNJ
