This could be anything from infection to something more serious.  It is a
very good idea that your referred to the physician.  You might even consider
a referral to a dermatologist.  
An easier possibility might be allergy though.  Occasionally I see moms with
older babies get sore nipples due to an allergic reaction to the food in
baby's mouth.  It may be that mom would not have had a reaction but when
there was a wound, it was further irritated by the food in baby's mouth.
You might suggest that she rinse baby's mouth between eating solid food and
nursing.
