Jean Cotterman is currently no-mail. She has asked that I forward this to
you all.

Linda Barrett, IBCLC

Publications recently seen in waiting rooms:

About barfed when I saw one of the 3 the Playtex ads in the August
Parents magazine. A double stroller with a smiling baby in one side
waving a new-type bottle and a stupid cow in a blanket in the other, with
the pitch line: "There's only one other way to keep milk this fresh!" The
ad 2 pages before made grudging reference to "If you're going to
breastfeed . . . ." indicating that therefore you need their newest type
of nipple which is apparently designed to "lessen nipple confusion".

Also seen on p. 106-112 in the Oct. 2005 issue of "Child Magazine:
Raising Kids with Smarts and Style."

"Rethinking Co sleeping: We go undercover about co-sleeping" Name-drops a
lot of impressive names of professional and prestigious
organizations-plays both sides ot the street very cleverly with
statements of mothers, and "interference with a couple's intimacy from 6
months on up." There are several references to more frequent night
nursing "just because baby knows it's there." One statement seems
especially full of "doublespeak" intended to confuse parents. Notice that
the statement on SIDS (p. 108) makes no mention of feeding method, though
it does come down just fairly strong on smoking habits of the mother.
Makes mention of convenience of parents and better bonding and making it
easier to breastfeed in the beginning, but nothing about why this is
important in success of breastfeeding, nor about possible benefits of
breastfeeding itself affecting the risk of SIDS. (Then again, maybe this
isn't yet as evidence based as all of us hope it is.)
