A further comment on cultural names of HP's and when/who visit them.
Joy and Denise have spoken on the the *usual* case in Aust of a mother/baby
seeing their OB and/or Ped for the 6 week postpartum check unless there is
complications. With the general practitioner doctor seeing you only when you
are sick.

This is the case for most of Aust, however in many rural areas there is
great difficulty getting any GP's to stay let alone specialists such as
OB's, Peditricians, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists ect ect.
In these situations it is quite common for a mother/baby to be seen by her
GP throughout the pregnancy/delivery/postpartum.
I live in Kalgoorlie in Western Aust (600km's East of Perth) In 5 pregnacy's
I have never seen an OB, my deliveries were all in hospital by a midwife,
not once did the doctor arrive in time! and my healthy breastfed children
:-) have never been sick enough to be refered to a peditrician. Over this
time whilst we do have a prefered GP if I cannot get an appointment then I
will take the children to another doctor.

In Kalgoorlie, which has a population of approx 30,000 with 800 deliveries
per year, we have one OB and one Ped, as you can imagine their waiting lists
are very long. The OB will only take the "high risk" pregnacy's, all others
are seen by the GP's that do deliver.
Any complications that are likely to result in prem babies are sent to Perth
prior to delivery. Any unexpected complications both with mum or babe and
the Royal Flying Doctor Service fly's them to Perth.
Even within one country the system of health delivery/services can be very
different.
