Hi all!
Kathleen Salisbury wanted to know whether circumcision might be a factor in
the apparent greater incidence of BF problems in baby boys. LLLI's journal for
Leaders Leaven (September/October 1994, volume 30 number 5) reported on a
study by
C. Howard et al that found that the feeding behavior of both breastfed and
formula fed deteriorated in the hours after surgery. The authors noted that
the observed deterioration in breastfeeding might contribute to breastfeeding
failure. (Sorry to plagerize`a bit; I can't think how else to word this.) The
original reference is:

Howard,C. et al. Acetominophen analgesia in neonatal circumcision: the
effect
    on pain. Pediatrics 1994; 93(4):641-46.

At least for some baby boys, circumcision could lead to difficulty in learning
to breastfeed as it did with the baby of a friend of mine. He eventually
nursed beautifully after his jaundice resolved.
