Kathy D says,

<< Don't forget -- evolutionary research suggests that the normal duration of
human breastfeeding should be about 6-7 years. One would suspect that the
"sucking need" should last the same amount of time. >>

Hmmm. Well, I would wonder if in some folks the "sucking need" lasts a lot
longer than that. Witness the number of people sucking on a cigarette. Or
we suck on lollipops, or chewy carmel candy or many other things. I've been
consciously attempting to drink a LOT more water than in the past (very
helpful when one is attempting to lose weight), and have found that I'm much,
much better at drinking what I need to drink if I'm using a sport bottle sort
of thing that requires some -- yup -- sucking. Am much LESS inclined to
drink from a glass of ice water at my desk or at dinner than the sport
bottle.

Jan B who was NOT breastfed for more than 2 weeks -- one side only, every
four hours whether I needed it or not.
