Absolutely right!! And as well as listening to mothers, we need to
be aware of other factors that could be making the baby fussy or
unhappy - and I find that very often, the mother (or her health
professional or her family) 'blame' breastfeeding 'because there must
be something in my milk' instead of (for example) accepting that the
baby needs/wants to be at the breast more than is considered to be
'normal'.

A typical call yesterday - mother of a two and a half week old baby
who was sometimes feeding little and often, and sometimes sleeping
for a couple of hours or more, but preferably in his mother's arms,
growing well, feeding expertly, and contented as long as he was
'permitted' to do this...this was, I suggested, not a reflection of
something 'wrong' with the milk, but just a normal baby. She had
wondered if the 'little and often' phases coincided with something
she had eaten. I think in that situation it is highly unlikely the
behaviour is diet related.
