Milk Thistle is a galactogogue which Dr. Tieraona Low Dog MD has recommended
to her clients (for years and years) as her favorite method to increase milk
supply. It is taken in the form of a steeped tea 3times/day. I have the
recipe at our clinic and will email it later today. Dr. Low Dog is an
Herbalist, Family Practitioner, and the Medical Director of the
TreehouseCenter of Integrative Medicine in Albuquerque, NM. She was also
recently appointed by President Clinton to a federal commission on
integrative medicine. She's an extraordinary human being and one of the best
speakers I've ever heard (most recently at the Breastfeeding in The New
Millennium conference in San Diego last May). I have had about 3 clients try
the Milk Thistle infusion and they all seemed to have a difficult time
keeping up with making or remembering to make the tea 3times/day (that's sad,
but understandable). One client didn't like the flavor, although Dr. Low Dog
says it's fine to put honey, milk, or whatever in it for flavor and that it
has a nutty taste. She has a website as well, that should be easy to find.
By they way there are no side effects from using Milk Thistle this way and it
is a liver strengthener.
