Just wanted to say how interesting I have found the recent posts on thumbs and pacifiers and respiration.Barbara Wilson-Clay's post really has me thinking. I have a bit of a question about the respiratory thoughts in respect to thumbsucking. What is the chance these sorts of problems would run in families? My husband was a breastfed (for 9 months) thumbsucker who has always been a terrible snorer. My younger sister suffered two near death SIDS episodes between 2 and 4 months of age and sucked her thumb from infancy to 8 or so. My two and a half year old has sucked his thumb since birth (even though a breast was ALWAYS comletely accessable) and already snores. All of this may have nothing to do with anything else just curious. I would be interested to hear if anyone knows of a correlation. And to second Jan B's thoughts, I completely agree that thumbsucking is of the childs' choosing (unless of course, the baby is neglected), not as parent controlled as giving a pacifier.
Thanks to all of you who share your infinite wisdom and passion with us everyday. You are such world changers.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Lane (volunteer with that well know support group)
