Rose, I think the best thing you can do in this situation is find some 
data that confirms the benefits of breastfeeding to depressed mothers 
(the oxytocin/prolactin hormonal response, etc.) and give it to this 
doctor.  If he won't acknowledge the benefit to the baby, he might be 
more likely to see the benefits to the mother, since the mother(s) are 
his patients, after all.  I know there is data out there supporting 
not only the benefits to the depressed mother of breastfeeding, but 
the dangers of stopping abruptly.

It is so frustrating when medical professionals who tend to be highly 
respected and trusted dispense incorrect information. :(
