Hello, my name is Carrie Jung and I am a nursing student at the
University of North Dakota.  Recently, I had a friend who was breastfeeding
and developed mastitis.  She was recommended to stop breastfeeding until the
infection subsided.  According to Olds, the issue of whether to continue
nursing or not has been controversial in the past, but most experts now
recommend continued nursing.  Breastfeeding is stopped only in the
presence of large amounts of nipple drainage (Olds).  The recommended
treatment is to increase feeding frequency, bedrest, increased fluid
intake, antibiotic treatment, and local application of heat and analgesics
for discomfort (Olds).
        Do you recommend that breastfeeding should or
should not continue with mastitis?  What kind of medical management and/or
preventive measures do you recommend?
