Stephanie -
First off, congrats on your good save with this mom! Sounds like you did a
fabulous job with the positioning, latch, etc.
Now you said "I don't believe she's depressed, and this is her third baby.."
This is where I would differ. I think she IS depressed! I've had four
children myself, and believe me being an experienced mom is no barrier to
depression. I was depressed for over a year with one of my children. I was
an experienced LLL leader and mother, my husband is a physician and neither
one of us recognized it for what it was.
She could well be feeling tired and over-whelmed. Second and third time moms
get a lot less support than first time moms because everyone assumes she knows
what she's doing by now. And I think in many ways they need more help than
first time moms! Your mom is certainly a "high need" mom right now. Can you
get her to come to LLL meetings for support? Or refer her to your co-leader?
I'm assuming you've been visiting her as an IBCLC, and this kind of on-going
emotional support is really beyond the scope of an IBCLC. It's silly for her
to pay for visits and for you to be spending your time hand-holding when you
could be seeing other clients. This is where mother-to-mother support comes
in.
See what kind of day to day support she has. Who is doing the cooking,
cleaning, shopping and laundry? How old are her other children and who's
watching them? This is no longer a bf problem, but it is a problem, and she
needs help.
