I am making the arrangements to subscribe to Breastfeeding Review, as their
articles are always so great. However, I really really really want to get
hold of the articles Fiona mentioned about mastitis in the recent edition.
I would be delighted to trade interesting articles on various subjects from
my own reading if anyone can provide me with copies of those papers. Thanks
in advance.

By the way, I often suggest ibuprofen as a first line of defense against
what appears to be inflammatory mastitis. I continue to wish there were a
way to study the effect of the use of something like benadryl-- thinking
that it is used for shrinking swollen throat passage-ways in people who have
bee sting allergies. Would it prove efficacious in reducing the internal
inflammation of mastitis, allowing for freer flow of milk and lymph. Would
it's slight tendency to dry up fluids assist with what may be oversupply?
Would that goof up anything if oversupply is a manifestation of, or a
compensatory mechanism for when the mother's body "suspects" the infant
needs more help due to ineffective feeding?

I also use over-the-counter vaginal monostat to initiate anti-fungal tx
along with gentian. If mother is worried about baby tasting it, she can
rinse breasts before nursing. The extra rinsing may be beneficial. Fungal
infections (and other types of infections as well) are affected by hygiene.
I had a mother whose baby had the fuzziest mouth full of thrush you ever
saw. Her nipples were the picture of health. I asked her if they had ever
bothered her during the several weeks baby had had the infection . When she
said no, I said, Boy, you must really shower a lot! She looked very
surprised, and confessed she had a sort of fetish about cleanliness and took
2-3 showers per day. She was literally washing it off her body before it
had a chance to plant itself, take hold, and begin to spread in the tissue.
I worry that we sometimes believe our own propaganda so much that we forget
to think logically. The idea that nipple washing is bad (prob. a reasonable
reaction against some of the old, silly practices of swabbing with alcohol
and the like) has translated into practice to where I see women who have
caked debris on their nipples because they think they shouldn't wash their
breasts.
