Linda Smith reminded us to celebrate the progress we are
making in promoting Breastfeeding. I wholeheartedly agree. We
still have much progress to make, but the progress is
wonderful. I gave birth for the first time 32 years ago. When
I had a c/s the nurse in the delivery room said "You,re not
still going to Breastfeed are you?" Fortunately I had a
supportive OB who said "of course she is" I happily went on
to Breastfeed for years with the support of LLL. It helped
me to deal with my grief from not having the birth I wanted.
When I think of all the misinformation and lack of support
available at that time I realize we have made tremendous
progress. I've even been able to witness the birth of the
profession of Lactation Consultant.By The way I cringe at the
thought of some of the advice I gave 20 years ago. I am happy
to say I still work at helping babies Breastfeed( thank you
Dr. Bergman for that reminder) and strive to keep my teaching
evidence based. While I'm remembering to be thankful, I'm also
very thankful for this list , thank you all for sharing and
teaching me so much and also lifting my spirit on days when
I"M discouraged. My 1st baby is now having a baby, and seeing
a nurse practitioner who is also an IBCLC, giving good
advice . She and her dh warm my heart when they tell me how
they will feed and parent my grandchild, just asked about
slings told a friend they don"t think they will need much
baby equipment. I attend a fairly large church and 95% of the
babies are Breastfed,( that surely wasn't true when I had
babies) many for a year not too many beyond yet. Hope I've
had a little part in that, I do provide free consults to
members as long as they need.Sorry this is so long feeling
nostalgic and thankful today. Chris Erland RN IBCLC
