Sorry guys, but I have been off line for several days.
I disagree with Jack a little.  CMV in full term newborns from Mom's milk is
essentially asymptomatic and not associated with long term sequellae.  The
paper Jack referred to had a few babies (less than or = 26 wks) with severe
pneumonia, hepatitis, and some with neurologic sequellae, thought due to the
CMV, not just due to prematurity (although, really tough to divide out at this
gestational age!).  Our local University Hospital has had 2 infants die in the
last two years, of CMV, also <26 weeks.  They were about to ban all FRESH
breastmilk until the infants were po or breastfeeding.  I am working with our
infectious disease docs and other breastfeeding-friendly MDs to draft a more
reasonable standard of care.  I will let fellow lactnuts know when our draft
is ready.
