Hello, Ilene.
Jan's idea about checking if there is a food(s) the mother craves is a
good one. People often crave a food they are allergic to. Another
suggestion is to have the parents do some "family detective work." They should ask all
the relatives on both sides of the family if they know of anyone in the
family who has a food that "doesn't agree with them." Those particular words are
very important. If you ask about "food allergy", people think only of hives
and you won't get very useful answers. But if you ask about "doesn't agree",
then you often get all kinds of answers, and in them may be the culprit that's
upsetting this baby, since food allergies/sensitivities are often genetic.
I worked with one family years ago. Baby was unhappy for 4 months.
We had ruled out dairy and other usual culprits, but not come up with the
offending food. But at 4 months, the parents discovered that there was a very
distant relative on daddy's side (whom daddy had never even met) who couldn't
handle tomatoes. Mommy loved tomatoes! When mom discontinued tomatoes, they
suddenly had a quiet little angel!
This mother may also want to go on an elimination diet where she
chooses 4 foods that don't cause problems in very many foods, eats only these foods
for several days while her body clears. Once baby shows less distress, then
mom can gradually add in other foods, one at a time, watching to see if baby
has a bad reaction to anything along the way.
