LuAnn has again raised the growing problem of formula recommendations being
made based on scant scientific evidence. The first approach that I suggest is
to ask each physician who recommends this formula for evidence of its safety
and effectiveness vs breast milk. Sometimes, an infant feeding practice task
force must be convened to stop the randomness of nutritional recommendations
being made. An evidence-based guideline is needed here! The physicians
probably were just in-serviced by a Ross company salesman. Neosure is labeled
for preterm babies following discharge. It comes in ready-to-feed and
powdered forms. The FDA has just finished warning health care providers that
powdered formulas are not sterile and that the liquid form should be used for
preterm or compromised infants. Neosure is avilable in the grocery stores and
on the Internet. Have these same physicians advised mothers to use only the
liquid (and much more expensive) form? How long are they supposed to use it
and if they are breastfeeding how are they suggesting the babies be
supplemented? I think parents have the right to know that feeding their baby
just breast milk with a hindmilk supplement if needed for calories is an
option. Neosure has added medium chain triglycerides and extra calcium and
phosphorus. The extra fat in hind milk is better for babies than MCT oil
which has been linked to absorption problems of other nutrients.

The EnfaCare Lipil that was just recalled is a powdered formula contaminated
with our old friend Enterobacter sakazakii and labeled for preterm babies. I
am scared to death to even think about giving a baby powdered formula, term
or preterm. How many parents are aware of infant formula contamination? Where
is the informed consent?
