Regarding guilt...Sue Marjoris....I loved your commentary on this subject,
you hit the nail on the head...I have enjoyed this thread because it has been
one of my goals at our hospital to get staff saying the same thing and
performing the same assessment and being supportive of breastfeeding from the birth
until the dyad doesn't "need" us anymore. We have had a support group
successfully going for over a year now, and our lactation office is trying hard to
implement the Baby Friendly Initiative, but it's hard to get formula companies out
of the hospital, so we have a ways to go. I agree with you, Sue about the
need for communication and assertiveness training by staff. I like the idea of
setting a standard and expectation and that you are watching staff to make sure
they comply. We are getting closer to that, having formed a CEU for our
staff to teach them to do this. Hopefully we will eventually get the kind of unit
we desire. I also would like to hear from others on how they have managed
this and what other steps can be done to support staff as well as families in
successfully breastfeeding and growing healthy families.

Thanks, Jo Bogard, RN (just took the exam yesterday!)
