Today, while helping a mom nurse, she told me a story about a friend of hers.
I thought I might share this story. Her friend had wanted to nurse her
baby, but was not producing enough milk. The baby was not gaining and had a large
weight loss. She didn't know enough to get help. She just listened to her
Pediatrician who told her to supplement with formula, never told her to see a
LC or pump, etc. So of course this mom was completely formula feeding within a
month. She was always upset by her failure. (Her friend, the mom I was
helping today has done a lot of researching on breastfeeding and has since told
her what to do. She has had her thyroid checked and sure enough....she is now
on synthroid). My point is while this mom was mourning the loss of nursing she
was at a food store stocking up on food and formula all the while wearing her
baby in a sling. She saw another mother wearing her baby in a sling and
became very excited. She commented to the woman how nice it was to finally see
another woman wearing her baby in a sling. The woman replied. "Well, you would
see at lot more moms doing it if you attended LLL meetings". Her tone was a
little snippish and she made a point to glare at the formula then walk away. I
guess my point is we just never know unless we have been in someone elses
shoes. I know I am a little disgusted when I see a parent buying formula. But I
will try to withhold the looks now!
