Hi Linda
The milk at the end of a high volume feed (such as first thing in the
morning) can be lower in fat than the milk that occurs at the beginning of a
low volume (evening cluster) feed. I think that what this research tells us
is that in any given woman, the volume of fat produced in a given period is
fairly static but as the total volume of milk increases the proportion of
fat in that feed is reduced. It might look like this: at one feed a mother
produces 120mls of milk. Of that 48 mls is fat. That feed is 40% fat. At
another feed a mother produces 50mls of milk. Of that feed 48mls is fat -
96%. (these figures are purely illustrative and in no way intended to
represent reality) It is for this reason that the Australian breastfeeding
Association no longer uses the terms foremilk and hindmilk routinely.
Some other lactnetters have an illustration they use with mothers on this
that uses a hot water tap (faucet).
Clinically, this research tells us that knowing how many mls of milk a baby
takes in one feed may not actually be terribly helpful.
Cheers
