Dear Joylyn and other responders,
I realize that this doctor was way out of line in the handling of this
situation. However, you all need to know that there is truly a condition
where the baby has a small anal opening, and it can cause problems by not letting
baby empty easily and completely. I have forgotten the technical name, but I
learned about it with a mom and baby who had contact with me a couple years
ago. You can NOT tell by looking at the baby's rectum if this condition is
present. The doctor *must* GENTLY insert his finger to determine if this problem
exists. There is a band of tissue, sort of like in pyloric stenosis, that is
too thick and tight. If I remember correctly, I think it *might* be able to
be widened by GENTLY working finger in, but I think it more often needs to be
corrected by surgery. While the condition does exist, this doctor did not
handle it correctly at all (in many ways!). This mother needs a second opinion,
in case there is truly a condition that needs correcting.
