I love the picture of Jerry Hall nursing her son. I had it scanned and am
using it as a screen saver. To me, it says: You don't have to be a
retiring saint in a shift to breastfeed. It suggests volumes about being
able to glory in the generative power of female sexuality. I've always
wondered what powerful women feel they've gained that power for if not to
use it on behalf of their own children -- and by extension, for other women
and their kids. I frankly think we've been way too discreet in our
breastfeeding images. That's why I've always loved those funny Infact
Canada posters.

When we passed the Texas legislation protecting public breastfeeding, I
testified to the (all male) committee that the women who wanted this right
included women doctors, judges, lawyers, teachers, engineers, CEOs, and
other powerful citizens who did NOT want some mall guard to hassle them
about where they had to go hide to feed their babies. We're not just
talking about the "little woman" here, boys. What probably won the day on
that whole deal (more than anything ANY of us said) was the fact that one of
the committee members chimed in and told how he and his wife were scolded by
a waiter in an expensive Houston restaurant when she nursed their baby at
the table. THAT sure made it real.
