>>No, this doesn't sound wacked. There are cases of rickets and vitamin D
deficiency in breastfed babies.
This really isn't a breastfeeding issue, it a sun light issue.
As I ask parents I find a lot of babies who spend little time out doors.
It seems to me the issue looks to be one of breastfeeding as formulas have
sufficient Vit D.
The tip should probably be to get sufficient sun light or use a supplement

this is a case of a nursing mother whose infant was diagnosed with "rickets"
at 8 months( winter 99) she was a single black mother and had been back to
work at 6 weeks. managed nursing well and had good support in the workplace
for pumping and storing on her 5 day a week job. Very compliant with a
generous milk supply. Hourly employee and very dependent on her salary.
The baby (a boy) was nursing at 5 am and was in day care by 8 am and was not
picked up until 6pm was nursed for all other feedings and she had started
solids at 5 1/2 months and baby showed no signs of food allergies. Weekend
for this busy mom was regular catch up work , resting , feeding and care of
the baby --not sure how much the baby was out. She was disappointed when she
was told her baby had a Vit D deficiency (his legs had started to bow). she
worked with her ped and started supplementation .
When she reported all this to me -- we discussed her finding out from child
care how often the baby was taken outside. She assumed that he was--and was
told very honestly by day care that the children under one year were not
taken outside unless the parent specifically requested it. this baby's stay
at daycare had come in fall when the days are short for this area followed
by winter with more of same. After taking the hx it seems that the culprit
was lack of sunshine and communication.
Made me sad for her because she tries so hard.
What did I learn ? That Vit D deficiency can happen and that mother's need
better anticipatory guidance along the way. I encouraged her to write the
history , give it to her ped group and the child care center and have them
incorporate more info to parents and child care workers to prevent such a
thing from happening .
I sent her a mother's day card this year.

this summer we have had enough sunshine to serve to all the babies in the
nation.
