‎Hi Jacqui,

‎Are mom and baby back together now? Something I recommend for nursing strikes and similar situations with babies of all ages is that mom spend her days and nights topless (at home, obviously), with baby in only a diaper.

At 8 months, baby could easily use a cup instead of a bottle (because of course we have to feed the baby), and if pacifiers are not used, so much the better.

Mom just goes about her day, wearing/carrying baby as much as possible‎. She doesn't offer to nurse but is simply always available if baby decides to. And if babe goes for the breast, mom should try to act like it's totally not unusual - a strong reaction can sometimes cause a set back.

Taking baths together, hanging out looking at books while cuddling and other low-key, high-contact activities are also helpful.

Bedsharing skin to skin is a big part of the program - babies will often breastfeed before they are fully awake in that setting.

Very few babies can resist the sight/smell/feel of their mothers' breasts for long‎, especially in this type of no-pressure situation.

I've never supported anyone that has been separated from their baby for such a long time though. Would love to hear how it goes if she tries it.

Subject: Re: resources for getting older babe back to breast

Hello, esteemed experts!

I am currently assisting a mother with getting her 8 month old baby girl back to breast. Breastfeeding was initiated immediately postpartum, but mother and baby were separated at day 3 pp. Baby has been receiving bottles and formula from her caregiver ever since. Mother has continued pumping and is extremely motivated to get baby back to breast.

I know my end of the job, my question is: what resources/websites/blogs are my breast friends liking these days for relactation/adoptive breastfeeding with older babies? AskLenore has always been my ‘tried and true’, but I’ve not had this situation in quite some time and thought I’d see if there’s anything relevant these days that I should know about. The less technical and more ‘Mom-friendly’, and the more likely I can share directly with mom, the better!
Thanks in advance!

I want to add that it was such a gratifying experience, I would love to do it again for any other LNers that might ever find themselves in the Western Oregon, USA area).
