Just anecdotal, but both my sons had the coated white tongue.  Never  had 
thrush.  Definitely never had problems eating!  My ped just sad it  was something 
that happens to some kids.  It disappeared when they started  to eat solids 
more frequently, approx. 1 year.  I did always look out for  other signs of 
yeast in their mouth and on their bottoms.
