A mother in my group has given me permission to post about her situation. An ultrasound has shown that she has placenta increta, but not placenta previa, despite a prior vaginal birth. Mothers who have had prior caesarean section deliveries are at risk of placenta accreta, increta, or percreta. Accreta is where the placenta attaches itself to the muscle of the uterus and will not separate. Increta, the placenta is firmly into the muscle, and percreta is into and beyond, perhaps into the bladder and will not separate. This is a serious condition usually causing hemorrhage and often the only thing that can be done to save the mother is an emergency hysterectomy. In some cases, the obstetrician leaves the placenta intact to be reabsorbed by the body. Have any of you wise women come across a mother who breastfed (and had a full milk supply) after leaving the placenta inside her uterus after baby's delivery? This is quite rare and I can't find much information about how it would impact breastfeeding.
