In traditional societies there is a transitional period following birth
during which mother and baby get to know each other & work out the steps of
the 'dance' of breastfeeding. In the earlier part of this period the woman
is in seclusion with her infant & other women take over her
responsibilities.  The technocratic culture of North America lays great
stress on the socialization of babies from birth so that they do not
interfere with adult working lives & other commitments & on inculcating in
children habits of independence.  Infant dependency is perceived as
