Hi Linda,

This is a good idea but those of us who are hospital based cannot "write it up" as such. I do document in the patient's chart what I see happening with the baby (ie: disorganized suckle) but I cannot attribute this kind of thing to an epidural in the patient's chart. I have passed on articles on the possible effects of epidurals on infant's suckling response to one of our anesthesiologists (who actually began to tinker with his dosages after reading them), and I mention the drawbacks of epidurals and there possible effects on breastfeeding in my classes (and often get looks that distinctly convey the message that they think that I must be from Mars). As someone recently mentioned, we must plod along as we can. I wish more of our Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine colleagues would take on this issue, in particular those that are OBs or Family Practitioners who deliver, as we have all seem the impact that physician can have on their patients.
