Received a call today from a woman who has just begun
treatment for rejection of her corneal implant. She was
given an injection of local anesthesia and cortisone in the
eye and is taking a cortisone eye drop every half hour.
Didn't ask how long she has had the implants, but apparently
for some time. Her baby is less than 2 months old but does
predictably sleep at least 4 hours at night. She nursed her
last child into the second year.

Her doctor wasn't sure if it would be okay to give her oral
prednisone. Hale is a little vague, stating that short term
use is probably okay, but large doses over long periods can
be hazardous. I am assuming the vagueness is due to unclear
or conflicting reports. The mother needs to know what is
meant by long term and how much is too much.

She also has questions as to whether nursing could have been
a factor in the rejection since she hadn't previously had a
problem. She wonders if hormones could trigger dryness in
the eye during lactation in the same way they can lead to
vaginal dryness.

Please reply privately as well as to the list as I am
currently NOMAIL.

If there are phone numbers of physicians familiar with
breastfeeding (especially any with specific expertise in
organ rejection or opthamology) that her doctor could call,
please send them to me. Thanks.
