I agree that the trajectory is useful. I disagree that it is normal for a
newborn to continue losing weight until day
5 or 6. That tells me either that baby is not getting enough access to
breast or something is wrong with milk transfer.
(mom's production or baby's suck) and it needs to be investigated. I know
from reading Noel-Weiss' paper that birth weight may not be accurate (R/T
IVs etc) but if baby comes to my office in that 48-72 hour window after
discharge and is still losing compared to discharge weight, something isn't
working right. and if mom doesn't have a sore nipple problem, baby no TT,
it is usually access to breast frequency that is the problem here in US.
Schedules and "the baby just ate" are big problems. Parents need to know
that the newborn eats a lot! That is what is setting up a good milk supply.
I think too many parents hear 2, 3 ,4 hours and think that is what the
newborn "should" be doing. If bottles have been inserted that screws up the
whole picture, back to lack of access to breast. If the regain trajectory
is slow, I believe mom will have supply issues by 3-4 mo. Just my long term
observations. Pat in SNJ
