Depression is an incredibly common and incredibly debilitating disease that
can lead to suicide if untreated.  While I also have apprehension about side
effects of the drugs used to treat it, I've had  extended family members and
friends whose distress was so extreme they would be dead today if not for
interventions with such drugs.  It is of course necessary to involve
counseling, lifestyle changes, and other modalities (my family members have
had good success with accupunture).  One always hopes that the day will come
when the disease stabilizes and people can withdraw from the meds, because
the side effects are unpleasant.
