Once more a goat milk tale.....
Had a patient who responded to the usual "do you plan to breastfeed"question
upon admission intake, stated "No". I inquired "why not?" She proceeds to
tell me that her older child had not breastfed well and she just didn't have it
in her to go through that again. She proceeded to share all the difficulties
of his feeding 12 years earlier and she just wanted to have it easier this
time around. All the problems included a travel through all the infant formulas
because he was "allergic" to everything. She said that the only thing she
could use was "a goat". I asked what the difficulties to breastfeeding were and
found out it was how frequent and how he spit up everything.
He even spit up the goat's milk, but that was all that was left for her. I
tried to assure her that every baby is different and that she would be provided
with lactation support and things might go easier with this baby...she was
older and wiser...different support system ( a new husband and
family)...."NO...we will try this formula ....brand name no longer available " I told her that
formula was no longer available...so she said "then I will just get a goat!"
So I said you mean its easier to have a goat...you need a permit for one in
the city, you have to feed it, milk it, clean it, shovel it and all the things
that farm animals require and she responded "yes",,,,the baby was born...fed
well on a commerical product that the neo prescribed and then threw up one time
and she was on the phone calling her husband to go get the goat. Morale of
the story:
A woman convinced against her will, is of the same opinion still! Some
people will do it their way no matter what.
